Plumber cost in Houston usually falls between $281 and $404 for a typical repair, according to HomeYou data through May 2026. Its wider range runs from $96 to $695. These are market figures from outside sources, not PipeElectric prices, and your job will land wherever access, parts and timing put it.
What does a plumbing repair usually cost in Houston?
A typical Houston repair sits in the low to mid hundreds. HomeYou's figures, based on 46,715 completed projects and shown through May 2026, are the closest local data available:
- Full range: $96 to $695
- Typical range: $281 to $404
Those numbers describe repairs, so large projects sit well above them. Plenty of calls fall inside the range, such as a drain cleaning on one line or a fixture repair. A slab leak, a sewer line or a repipe will not. Treat the figure as a guide to what is normal, and not as a quote.

Plumber cost in Houston by type of job
Job type moves the bill more than anything else. This Old House published national figures for non-emergency work during normal business hours, updated June 2026. They are market averages from a national publisher, so Houston jobs can differ.
| Job | National market range |
|---|---|
| General plumbing job | $150-$500 |
| Clearing clogs or snaking a drain | $100-$500 |
| Leaking pipes | $150-$450 |
| Toilet repair | $100-$300 |
| Faucet replacement | $150-$600 |
| Gas line repair | $250-$750 |
| Water heater repair | $150-$750 |
| Water heater installation | $800-$2,000 |
| Burst pipes | $1,000-$4,000 |
| Slab leak | $500-$4,000 |
| Whole-house plumbing | $10,000-$20,000 |
Water damage repair is separate work. This Old House lists it at $1,000 to over $10,000, and it is rarely part of a plumber's bill. For water heater choices, see our water heater repair guide.

How do hourly rates and service fees work?
Plumbers bill by the hour, by the job, or with a fee plus time. This Old House's June 2026 figures put the national average at about $100 an hour, plus a service fee or minimum charge:
- Overall: $25 to $200 an hour
- Journeyman plumber: about $50 to $100 an hour
- Master plumber: about $75 to $200 an hour
The same guide says service call fees run lower in Texas and Ohio than in California and Illinois, though it gives no dollar amounts. Dollar figures for those fees are older: in June 2023, Bob Vila listed service call fees of $100 to $350 and trip fees of $50 to $300.
Flat-rate pricing is also common. You agree to a total for the job up front, so a slow repair does not raise the bill. Hourly billing can work out cheaper for quick fixes. Neither is better on its own, so ask which one applies.
Questions to ask on the first call
Four questions settle most billing surprises:
- Is there a service call or trip fee, and does it go toward the repair?
- Will the price be hourly, or a flat rate for the job?
- Is finding the problem part of the visit, or billed apart?
- Is there a minimum charge, and how much time does it cover?
Write down the answers. They let you compare two companies on the same terms.
What raises the price of a plumbing job?
Access, timing and the condition of the system do most of the work. These factors come up again and again:
- Access: a pipe behind tile, under the slab or in a tight attic takes longer
- Timing: market rates climb outside normal hours, and Bob Vila reported 1.5 to 3 times the standard rate in 2023
- Parts: a common valve is one thing, and a special-order part is another
- Pipe material: older galvanized or cast iron may not join cleanly to new pipe
- Permits: some work needs one, so check with the city's permit office
- Restoration: drywall, tile and flooring repair are usually separate
- Hidden damage: a corroded shut-off can turn a small job into a larger one
Busy periods matter too. This Old House notes higher rates during winter freezes and after heavy rain, and Houston gets both kinds of pressure, though freezes are rare.

What makes a Houston job different from a national average?
Construction and climate explain most of the gap. National guides mix in homes with basements and crawl spaces, where a plumber can walk up to the pipe. Most Houston homes sit on a slab, so a line under the floor means locating the break, then cutting concrete or rerouting through the walls or attic. Attic water heaters and supply lines add climbing time, and expansive clay can stress old joints, so one repair may expose the next weak spot.
Housing age varies too. The Houston-area median year built is 1993, according to Census ACS 2020-24 data, so plenty of the metro is newer construction. Older neighborhoods can still have galvanized supply lines or cast iron drains, and those take longer to tie into.
Does Texas charge sales tax on a plumbing bill?
On home repairs, labor is generally not taxed. The Texas Comptroller's Publication 94-116 says labor to repair, remodel or restore residential real property is not taxable. Materials are different. On a separated contract, you pay sales tax on the materials line. On a lump-sum contract, the contractor pays the tax when buying materials, so you see no tax line, though that cost sits inside the total.
Two quotes for the same job can look different for that reason alone, so ask which kind you are getting. Commercial work follows different rules. The publication is dated March 2007, so confirm the details with the Comptroller on a large project.
How our team suggests reading a plumbing quote
Look at what the total includes before you look at the total. Our team's general advice for any quote, from any company:
- Get it in writing, with labor and materials shown.
- Check whether permits and inspections are listed if the work needs them.
- Ask what happens if the plumber finds something unexpected.
- Ask for the license number, and look it up. Plumbing in Texas is regulated by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
- Compare like for like. A low price that leaves out the permit or the cleanup may not be lower.
If a price sounds very low, ask what it leaves out. If it sounds high, ask what drives it. A good plumber can explain either answer in plain terms.

How can you keep a plumbing bill down?
Give the plumber less to work around, because time on site is the part of the bill you can influence. Our team's general advice:
- Clear the sink cabinet, closet or path to the attic before the visit.
- Find the main shut-off valve, and check that it still turns.
- Save small jobs for one visit, so any fee is paid once.
- Send a photo of the problem and the model label on anything that failed.
- Fix a small drip early, before it soaks a cabinet or a wall.
Which jobs are worth doing yourself?
Small, visible, low-risk jobs can save you a service fee. Replacing a toilet flapper, cleaning a faucet aerator, or plunging a single slow drain needs no special training. Stop at anything involving gas, a water heater, a sewer line or a pipe inside a wall.
Those jobs carry safety and code risks, and some need a permit. A botched repair can also cost more than the original problem, because a plumber then has to undo it first. If you do hire someone, Texas requires a licensed plumber for this kind of work, so ask for the number before the job starts.
What should you budget for your own job?
Budget from the type of job, then add room for access. For a simple repair, the Houston range above is a sensible starting point. For anything under a slab or inside a finished wall, expect a wider spread until someone has seen it.
Your quote from PipeElectric comes after someone has seen the work, and it will be clear and upfront. The market figures here are for planning only and are not what you will be charged. Homes in South Houston and across the city vary too much in age and access for a phone average to mean much. You can read about the work we do on our plumbing services page, or call and describe the problem.
Common questions
Do plumbers charge just to come out?
Many do, and the fee may or may not count toward the repair. Bob Vila reported service call fees of $100 to $350 in June 2023, often covering the first hour. Practices differ by company, so ask on the phone what any fee covers and whether it is applied to the work.
Is it cheaper to pay a plumber by the hour or by the job?
It depends on how predictable the work is. A flat rate suits a defined job, like swapping a faucet, because a slow repair cannot raise the bill. Hourly billing can come out lower on a quick fix, but a seized valve in a Houston attic can stretch the clock. Ask for the rate type in writing before work starts.
Do I pay sales tax on plumbing work in Texas?
Usually not on the labor for a home repair. The Texas Comptroller's Publication 94-116 says labor to repair residential real property is not taxable, while materials are. A separated contract shows tax on the materials line, and a lump-sum contract builds it into the price. Commercial property follows different rules, so ask how the quote treats it.
How much does it cost to snake a drain in Houston?
Market guides put it at about $100 to $500, based on This Old House's national figures updated June 2026, and no Houston-only figure is published. A single sink branch sits near the low end. A main line in a house with no outdoor cleanout sits higher. These are market figures, not PipeElectric prices.
