A dripping spout usually needs one worn part, and faucet and fixture repair in Houston is mostly a matter of finding it before scale makes it harder to pull. Close the valves under the sink to stop a bad drip, then call us. Shower valves and disposals take more diagnosis, and both are covered below.

Why is your leaky faucet dripping?

Faucets drip because one seal or cartridge inside has worn out. The location of the water tells you which:

  • Drip from the spout: a worn washer, seat or cartridge
  • Water around the handle: O-rings or the packing
  • Puddle in the cabinet: the supply connection, the sprayer hose or the faucet base
  • Weak flow at one faucet: a scaled aerator
  • Stiff or gritty handle: a cartridge full of mineral deposits

The waste adds up. EPA says one drip per second comes to more than 3,000 gallons a year, enough for more than 180 showers.

How is a fixture problem diagnosed?

Most diagnosis is simple once the water is off and the handle is out.

  1. Note where the water appears and when.
  2. Shut the stop valves, and test them, because old ones often leak when turned.
  3. Pull the handle and trim, and identify the faucet type.
  4. Inspect the cartridge or washer, the seat and the O-rings.
  5. Check pressure at a hose bib if more than one fixture is misbehaving.

The type of faucet decides the parts. Compression faucets use rubber washers, while cartridge, ball and ceramic disc types use sealed assemblies. A washer is simple, and a cartridge needs an exact match.

How does Houston water wear out faucets and fixtures?

Scale is the local wear factor. The Tap Water Data site lists City of Houston water at about 100 to 120 milligrams of hardness per liter, which is moderately hard on the U.S. Geological Survey scale, using utility data from October 2025. That is enough to leave a white crust on aerators and to stiffen cartridges over the years.

Scale shows up first where water dries and sits: spout tips, shower faces and the moving parts inside a cartridge. Those deposits can lock a cartridge into a faucet body. If your water leaves a heavy crust within months, a water softener is worth pricing, and our guide to what hard water does to plumbing explains the trade-offs.

Water in the suburbs comes from different sources, so ask your utility for a current figure.

When does a shower valve repair need a plumber?

Call for a plumber when the leak or the temperature problem sits behind the wall. The EPA's own guidance says a leaking showerhead connection is a do-it-yourself fix, while valve leaks call for a plumber or handyperson.

Look for these signs of a failing valve:

  • A shower head dripping after the handle is fully off
  • A sudden swing to hot when a toilet flushes
  • A handle that turns too far or sticks
  • Less hot water than there used to be
  • A stain or soft spot on the far side of the shower wall

Temperature swings are a safety issue. Valves listed to ASSE 1016 balance pressure, temperature or both, and older two-handle sets offer no such protection. California's plumbing code, built on the Uniform Plumbing Code, caps showerhead temperature at 120°F, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission urges setting water heaters to 120°F. Ask what Houston's amended code requires for your valve when it is replaced. Trade guidance in PHCP Pros says to reset a pressure-balancing valve's limit stop after a water heater change.

Which fix fits: part, rebuild or kitchen faucet install?

Choose by the age of the fixture and the condition of the body.

Fixture problem Usual fix Works well when Trade-off
Worn washer or cartridge Replace the part Parts are available Other old seals remain
Scaled aerator or head Clean or replace Flow loss at one fixture Scale will come back
Shower cartridge Replace from the front Valve body is sound Must match the valve
Failed valve body Replace the valve Wall access exists Wall and tile work
Corroded or dated faucet Kitchen faucet install or new bathroom fixture Base, deck or holes are sound Higher upfront cost

New fixtures use less water. Texas Health and Safety Code Section 372.002 sets a maximum of 2.2 gallons a minute for faucets at 60 psi and 2.5 for showerheads. WaterSense labeled bathroom faucets go further at 1.5 gallons a minute, and labeled showerheads at 2.0, according to the EPA.

When is garbage disposal repair worth doing?

A jam is usually fixable, and a leak from the disposal body usually is not. Free the jam with the hex wrench, then press the reset button. A drip from the sink flange or the drain connection is a seal problem and can be repaired. A drip from the casing means the unit is finished.

Grease is the main enemy here. Houston Public Works' Corral the Grease message is to put fats, oils and grease in the trash, because they cool and clog in the sewer system. Run cold water with the disposal, and scrape plates into the trash when you can.

Installing a disposal where none existed may need a new outlet, and that is electrical work for a licensed electrician.

Faucet and fixture repair in Houston: the visit step by step

Each visit runs the same way, from a kitchen drip to a shower valve:

  1. Tell us the fixture and the symptom. A photo of the model helps.
  2. We shut off the water and open the fixture.
  3. We show you the worn part and explain repair or replacement.
  4. A clear, upfront quote comes first, ahead of any new part.
  5. We make the repair or fit the new fixture.
  6. We run hot and cold, check for leaks, and clear up.

What this work includes:

  • Diagnosis of the fixture and its stop valves
  • Parts matched to your model
  • Repair or installation, tested under pressure
  • A check under the cabinet or behind the access panel

A faucet job covers the stops, supply lines and drain connection, because a new faucet on a seized stop just moves the problem.

The stops get tested first, since a stop that will not close means the water cannot be isolated for the repair. A kitchen job takes in the sprayer hose, the basket strainer and the trap connection when they sit in the way. A shower job means the trim, the cartridge and any stops built into the valve. For a new fixture, the hole count, deck thickness and shut-off size get checked against the model first. A disposal swap covers the mounting ring, the drain connection and the dishwasher inlet, and it stops at the plumbing. Tile, countertop cutting and new wiring belong to other trades, so raise them at the start if the job needs them. The job ends with hot and cold run at full flow and the cabinet floor dry.

What affects faucet repair cost?

The cost depends on parts, access and age. We quote after seeing the fixture, and these are the factors:

  • Part availability: a common cartridge, or an older part that takes tracking down
  • Fixture type: kitchen pull-down, widespread bath set, or shower trim
  • Stop valves: working, or due for replacement
  • Access: a clear cabinet or an open wall behind the shower
  • Scale: a part that slides out, or one that fights back

The cost climbs when old stops break on the first turn, a discontinued cartridge takes tracking down, or a shower valve needs an opening from the back of the wall. Pull-down kitchen faucets and widespread bath sets take longer under the sink than a single-hole swap. Shower trim that no longer matches its valve can force a valve change, which is the jump from a small repair to wall work. Hard water adds time when a seized cartridge has to be pulled.

What do Houston and Texas rules say about fixtures?

Most faucet swaps sit outside the permit system. The Houston Permitting Center's fixture permit page lists lavatory and kitchen faucets and garbage disposals as exempt fixtures. The City's amended code, at Section 104.2, also exempts fixing a leaking valve or fixture if nothing is replaced or rearranged. Replacing a shower valve inside the wall is less clear, so check with the Permitting Center first. Section 104.2 also says an exemption does not authorize work that breaks the code.

Shower valve work inside the wall falls under the Plumbing License Law. Its administrator, the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, can confirm any license you are shown.

Faucet and Fixture Repair around Houston

  • Sugar Land · Sugar Land's Main system reaches 16.4 gpg, well above Houston's figure, so cartridges scale harder.
  • The Woodlands · Ten MUDs retail Woodlands water, so ask yours for a hardness figure before blaming a cartridge.
  • Webster · With 78% of Webster households renting, check who approves a fixture change before buying one.
  • Baytown · A third of Baytown homes predate 1970, so stop valves there often need replacing too.
  • Katy · Katy's Gulf Coast Aquifer wells are worth a hardness test before new fixtures go in.
  • Galena Park · Rusty water from iron and manganese stains Galena Park fixtures; report it at 713-672-2556.
  • Tomball · Tomball's well water report gives no hardness figure, so test before fitting new fixtures.
  • Bellaire · Bellaire draws 48% of its water from Evangeline wells, so its scale can differ from Houston's.

Faucet and Fixture Repair questions

Should I repair a faucet or replace it?

Repair a good-quality faucet with a worn cartridge or washer, because the parts are small and the body lasts. Replace it when parts are unavailable, the base is corroded, or the faucet has already been rebuilt twice. Older faucets on hard water sometimes will not release a stuck cartridge, which settles the question.

Why does my faucet still drip after a new cartridge?

The seat or O-rings may be the real failure, or the cartridge may not match the faucet. High water pressure also pushes water past good parts. A gauge on a hose bib will show that, and it is worth checking when several fixtures drip at once. Plumbing codes generally call for a regulator above 80 psi.

Can I supply my own faucet for the install?

Often, yes, as long as the model is on hand so its fit can be checked first. Measure your sink holes before buying, since a single-hole faucet and a three-hole sink need a deck plate. Check the box for parts, because some models ship without supply lines. Tell us the model when you call.

Do you have to tear out the tile to fix a shower valve?

Not always. Most valve cartridges come out from the front once the handle and trim are off. Replacing the valve body is the job that needs access, usually from the wall behind the shower, such as a closet. If the back of the wall is tile too, the plan needs more thought.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?

It is usually jammed. Switch it off, then turn the hex socket at the bottom with the wrench that came with it, and press the reset button once it spins free. Never put a hand inside. If it hums after that, or leaks from the body, repair may not be worthwhile.
