Emergency leak repair in Houston begins at your main shut-off valve, because no repair helps while water is still flowing. Close it, shut the heater down if hot water is what's escaping, and photograph the damage. Our phones are open at 7 AM every day except Saturday, until 8 PM Sunday through Thursday and until 6 PM Friday.

Which leaks count as an urgent pipe leak?

A leak is urgent when you cannot stop it at a fixture valve, or when water is reaching flooring, walls or anything electrical. Treat these as urgent:

  • Water spraying or pouring from a pipe, a flooding pipe in a wall or under a sink
  • A ceiling that is wet, stained and growing, or sagging
  • Water coming up through a floor, with the meter still moving
  • A leak near an electrical panel, outlet or appliance
  • A water heater leaking from the tank

A drip at a faucet or under a sink, with a working stop valve, can wait for a scheduled visit. So can a stain that is dry and not growing. Close the stop, put down a towel, and call when you can.

Water shut off help: what to do in the first five minutes

Work in this order, because stopping the flow protects everything else:

  1. Close the main shut-off valve. On a slab home it is usually on an outside wall near a hose bib, in the garage, or in a yard box between meter and house.
  2. If the hot side is leaking, turn the water heater off at its gas control or breaker.
  3. If water is near outlets or a ceiling light, switch that circuit off at the panel, but only if you can reach the panel on dry ground.
  4. Open a low faucet outside to drain the lines.
  5. Move furniture and rugs, and catch what is dripping.
  6. Take photos and video before cleanup.

If the valve is stuck, do not force it. If the only working valve is at the meter box, a meter key from a hardware store turns it, and your utility can help if it will not move. Houston Public Works talked residents through shut-offs at 713-837-0311 in the 2021 freeze, ABC13 reported.

On many slab homes the shut-off sits in a small box or on the wall where the line enters.

Leave it off until a plumber has looked at the line. Reopening the main to test a leak you cannot see often puts more water behind the wall.

Ceiling leak plumber or AC tech: how to tell

Check what sits above the ceiling, because the fix depends on it. A wet ceiling with the water off and still spreading usually means water already trapped above it, and that should slow within hours. A leak that stops when you close the main is a pressurized supply line.

Water that keeps coming hours after the main is closed points somewhere else. It may be a drain line, which only leaks when someone runs a fixture. It may be an AC condensate line, which is common in Houston summers because attic air handlers pull a lot of water from humid air. It may also be rain, if a storm just passed.

Attic water heaters and air handlers put water directly above finished ceilings.

Attic water heaters deserve a look too. Check the drain pan and the fittings at the top of the tank. If the tank itself is leaking, close its cold-water valve and turn it off.

Is the leak yours, or the City's?

Read the meter to find out. With the main shut-off valve closed, a dial that keeps moving means water is leaving between the meter and that valve, which is a line on your property. A dial that sits still means your shut-off is holding, and the leak is downstream in the house.

Water bubbling up from the street, sidewalk or around a hydrant is a different call. In Houston, report it to Houston 311 by dialing 311, or 713-837-0311 from outside city limits. Local reporting says crews rank leaks by size and impact, and repairs can take weeks, so a report starts the process and does not fix the leak that day. In Bellaire, Pearland and other cities, use the number on your water bill.

When can you reach us, and what if we are closed?

Phones open at 7 AM on every day but Saturday. They close at 8 PM Sunday through Thursday and at 6 PM on Friday. Saturday stays shut all day. Phones stay closed outside those hours, so plan on holding the leak until they reopen. The longest stretch is Friday at 6 PM to Sunday at 7 AM.

While you wait:

  • Keep the main closed, and use bottled water for drinking.
  • Check the wet area with a fan once power is safe. The EPA's window for drying water-damaged items is 24 to 48 hours, before mold takes hold.
  • Call your insurer's claims line to report the loss.
  • Call a water-damage restoration company if floors or walls are soaked. Your insurer can usually suggest one.
  • If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call 911, then CenterPoint Energy at 713-659-2111.

What happens once a plumber is at the leak?

A leak visit moves from finding to fixing, with your approval in the middle:

  1. We confirm the main is off and check the meter.
  2. We find the source. Hidden leaks may need leak detection.
  3. We explain what failed and what the options are.
  4. A clear, upfront quote goes to you for approval.
  5. We repair the line, reopen the water slowly, and check for other leaks.
  6. You hear what failed, what changed, and what to watch.

Included in a leak visit:

  • Shut-off and meter check
  • Tracing the source of the leak
  • Repair of the failed pipe or fitting
  • Pressure check once water is back on

The visit aims to fix the point that failed, not just stop the drip. That can mean cutting out a split, remaking a joint, or replacing a failed stop, supply hose or water heater connection. If a part is not on hand, the line can be capped so the rest of the house gets water back. Supply hoses at washers, toilets and sinks fail often, and each has its own stop, so the main may only need to stay closed until that stop is proved. Attic leaks also get a look at the drain pan and nearby fittings, because one wet spot can have two sources. When the water turns out to be an AC condensate line or the roof, you hear that plainly and call that trade instead.

Drywall, flooring and drying are separate trades. If the same line has failed before, ask about whole house repiping, and if the leak is under the foundation, slab leak repair has its own process.

What drives the cost of emergency leak repair in Houston?

Cost follows what it takes to reach and fix the pipe. These are the main factors:

  • Access: behind tile, in an attic, or under a slab
  • Pipe: copper, CPVC, PEX or older galvanized
  • Extent: one fitting, a length of pipe, or several failures
  • Shut-down: how much of the house stays without water during the repair
  • Restoration: drying, drywall and flooring, which are separate

A hard freeze can multiply the problem. Houston Public Works estimated that roughly one city water customer in four had a leak in the February 2021 freeze, the Houston Chronicle reported, and some leaks only showed after thawing. We quote after we see the job, because two wet ceilings can hide very different repairs.

Attic lines in a Houston summer take longer to reach safely than a line under a sink. A second-story line over a finished ceiling may need more than one opening. If pipe gets replaced, a permit and inspection can join the bill.

Does an emergency repair need a Houston permit?

Sometimes, and replacement is the dividing line. Section 104.2 of Houston's amended plumbing code exempts stopping a leak when no valve, pipe or fixture is replaced or rearranged. Cutting in new pipe falls outside that, so ask the Permitting Center. Houston's code is the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code with amendments, in force since January 1, 2024. Rosenberg wants an application by the next business day after an emergency repair. Drying crews answer to different rules: the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation licenses mold remediation.

Plumbing work in Texas answers to a state agency, the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Request the license number from whoever opens your wall.

Emergency Leak Repair questions

What if I can't find my main water shut-off valve?

Walk the line from the street toward the house. Check the meter box, then the wall nearest the meter, the garage, and any small box in the yard. Older Houston homes may have only a valve at the meter box. Look for it today if nothing is leaking, and mark it for everyone in the house.

The shut-off valve won't turn. Should I force it?

No. Forcing an old valve can snap the stem and make the leak worse. Try steady pressure with a wrench on a square handle. If it stays stuck, move to the valve at the meter box with a meter key if you can reach it, and if that fails, contact your water utility or Houston 311.

Should I poke a hole in a bulging ceiling?

Yes, if the drywall is sagging with water and the power to that room is off, a small hole over a bucket lets it drain in one place, which can stop the whole panel falling. Stay out from under it, wear eye protection, and close the main shut-off valve first.

Will homeowners insurance pay for a sudden pipe leak?

It depends on your policy, so call your insurer soon. The Texas Department of Insurance advises homeowners to photograph damage before repairs, keep damaged items until the adjuster sees them, and keep receipts. Do what stops the damage from growing, but hold permanent repairs until the insurer has looked.

What can I do if a leak starts on a Friday night?

Keep the main closed and call when phones reopen at 7 AM Sunday. Bottled water covers drinking, and a bucket of saved water can flush a toilet. If the leak is at one fixture and its stop valve holds, you can reopen the main slowly and watch the meter.

Can I get credit on my water bill after a leak?

Possibly, if you are a Houston Public Works customer. Its billing page offers a Universal Adjustment Form for credits related to leaks, and customer service is at 713.371.1400 on weekdays from 8 AM to 7 PM. Keep your plumber's invoice. Customers of other utilities should ask their own billing office.
