Sewer line repair in Houston starts with proof: a camera shows whether the pipe is cracked, offset, rooted or collapsed, and where the damage sits. From there you can compare a spot repair, a liner or a full replacement. The private line is the homeowner's responsibility, so see the defect before you commit to any digging.

What does a broken sewer pipe look like from the house and yard?

A broken sewer line usually shows up as a repeat problem, and the first stoppage rarely tells you much. Watch for these:

  • The same stoppage returning after each cleaning
  • Sewage smell in the yard or near the slab
  • A soggy strip or an extra green line across the lawn
  • Sunken ground along the path of the pipe
  • Roots coming back on the cable every time
  • Sewage standing at a cleanout

EPA's sewer inspection guidance tells crews to look for the same surface clues, sunken ground and ponding water above a line.

Not every wet yard is your pipe. In a February 2026 news report, a southwest Houston family's flooded backyard traced to a break in a City sewer pipe just past a neighbor's fence.

What damages sewer pipe in Houston?

Ground movement, roots and age do most of the damage, and each leaves its own mark on camera.

Defect What it looks like Common cause
Crack Line along the pipe wall Soil pressure, age
Offset joint One pipe end sitting higher than the next Clay swelling and shrinking
Belly Water standing in a low section Soil settling under the pipe
Root intrusion Hair-like mass at a joint Moisture escaping at a gap
Scale or pitting Rough, flaking wall Corrosion in cast iron
Collapse Pipe wall caved in A severe stage of any of these

Many Houston homes built before about 1980 drain through cast iron, and EPA identifies hydrogen sulfide as a source of corrosion in wastewater systems. Where the ground caused the failure, see sewer repair after soil shift, because replacing pipe without addressing the bedding can repeat the problem.

How do you confirm the break before digging?

Confirm it with a camera and a locator, then mark the ground. We run a sewer camera inspection from a cleanout, note the distance to each defect, and trace the camera head from above to mark its position and depth. That is how a repair turns into one small hole and not a trench across the yard.

Before any digging, buried utilities have to be marked. Texas law requires notice through the 811 system at least 48 hours before excavation that disturbs the soil.

Sewer spot repair, lining or sewer line replacement?

Choose by how much of the pipe is bad and what sits on top of it. One clean break suits a spot repair. Several defects spread along an old run usually point to replacement, because each patch leaves the pipe between them in service.

Method How it works Best when Trade-off
Sewer spot repair Dig at the defect, replace that section One bad spot, rest of pipe sound Other sections stay old
Open trench replacement Dig the run, lay new pipe Long failure, poor slope, belly Yard, drive or walk restoration
Pipe bursting Pull new pipe through the old path Long run under a drive or landscaping Needs access pits, not for every pipe
Cured-in-place liner Resin liner cured inside the old pipe Cracks and joints in intact pipe Barred on collapsed or compromised pipe

What Houston and Texas rules apply to a sewer repair?

Houston's rules matter here. The City's amendments to the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code list the accepted standards for trenchless replacement of building sewers, and say cured-in-place liners cannot be used on collapsed or compromised pipe. Earlier City amendments also barred trenchless repair of cast iron soil pipe. Before you sign for a liner on old cast iron, ask the Houston Permitting Center how the current code applies.

Under Texas law, the responsible master plumber assumes responsibility for work done under that license, so ask any contractor whose license covers the job. Licensing for piping from the building to the street runs through the state plumbing board, formally the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Cities outside Houston run their own permit offices.

Sewer line repair in Houston, step by step

The job runs from video to written plan to a tested line:

  1. Call and describe the symptoms and any past cleanings.
  2. We clear the line if needed, run the camera and mark the defect.
  3. We walk you through the video, your repair options and a clear, upfront quote.
  4. Utilities are marked, and any City permit is confirmed for the method.
  5. We repair or replace the section, keeping proper fall on the pipe.
  6. We run water, review the line on camera before backfill where access allows, and go over what changed.

What a sewer repair job covers

The job covers the agreed stretch of private line, from proof of the defect to a tested pipe. It ties new pipe into the old at both ends, so the condition of those ends matters as much as the break.

A spot repair exposes the defect, cuts out the failed length and joins new pipe to old with fittings that suit both materials. A full replacement does the same from the house connection to the limit of the private line. Either way, the bedding under the pipe gets as much care as the pipe, and the slope is checked before the trench closes.

  • Camera confirmation of the defect
  • Location and depth marking
  • Repair or replacement of the agreed section
  • A flow test after the work
  • A plain explanation of what failed and why

Lawn, driveway and landscape restoration is usually separate work, so ask about it when you compare quotes. A defect past the street cleanout belongs to Houston Public Works, and a 311 report starts that repair.

What drives sewer repair cost?

Length, depth and what has to be removed drive the cost, and the method follows from those. This Old House, in figures updated March 30, 2026, puts national sewer line replacement between $1,390 and $5,320, with an average of $3,320. It lists traditional excavation at $50 to $200 per foot and trenchless work at $60 to $250 per foot. Those are market figures and not PipeElectric prices, and permits can add to them.

  • Length: a few feet of pipe, or the full run to the street
  • Depth: a shallow line, or a deep one that needs a shored trench
  • Surface: lawn, or a driveway, walk or mature tree on top
  • Location: in the yard, or under the slab
  • Method: open trench, bursting or liner
  • Restoration: turf, concrete or paving put back afterward

We look at the video and the site, then give you a written estimate with a clear scope.

How do you protect a repaired sewer line?

Keep what caused the failure from happening again. Keep the camera video and the marked location with your house records. Keep trees and large shrubs away from the new line. Water near the foundation evenly in dry months, because steady soil moisture means less movement. Keep grease and wipes out of the system, and scope the line again if a stoppage returns.

Sewer Line Repair around Houston

  • Bay City · Cracking river clays pull at 1960s and 1970s laterals, about a third of Bay City housing.
  • Katy · A University of Houston study found about 2 cm of yearly sinking, which strains rigid joints.
  • Pasadena · Homes from the 1950s boom are of an age that often means cast iron sewers.
  • Baytown · Humble Oil laid out early streets in 1923, so some sewer laterals here are very old.
  • League City · Harvey flooded about a quarter of homes, so confirm any buried defect on video before digging.
  • Dickinson · Sewer service comes from Galveston County WCID #1, so settle the ownership line before excavation.
  • Jacinto City · Houses from the 1941 subdivision may still drain through original building sewers.
  • Galena Park · Repairs run through the city's own Permits & Inspections office, which also registers contractors.
  • Angleton · With a 1979 median home age, repairs here also go through Development Services on MGO Connect.

Sewer Line Repair questions

How do I know if the break is on my side or the City's?

The cleanout is the marker. Houston Public Works treats private pipes as the homeowner's job, and public pipes or those in a public right-of-way as its own. Standing sewage at the street cleanout means a 311 report. A camera run can also show a defect's distance from the house, which helps settle a dispute.

Is a broken sewer pipe an emergency?

Yes, if sewage is inside the house or pooling in the yard. Stop using water and get help right away. A cracked pipe that still flows can usually wait for a scheduled visit, but keep watching for slow drains. Leaks under a slab should not sit, because they wet the soil there.

Can a collapsed sewer line be lined?

No, not in Houston, going by the City's code. Its plumbing amendments say cured-in-place liners cannot be used on collapsed or compromised piping. A liner also needs a clear path, and a collapse does not leave one. That section has to be dug up and replaced, though the rest of the line may still be a candidate.

Do I need a permit to repair a sewer line in Houston?

Usually yes, so check with the Houston Permitting Center before work begins. The City requires a sewer connection permit, obtained by a master plumber registered with the City, and its older code amendments treated replacing defective sewer pipe as permitted new work. Homesteaders doing their own plumbing have a separate permit route. Confirm the current rule for your job.

Does homeowners insurance pay for sewer line repair?

Only if your policy says so. The Texas Department of Insurance says sewer backup coverage varies, and it lists backup of sewers or drains among common add-on endorsements. Pipe wear itself is often treated differently from sudden water damage. Call your insurer before digging, photograph everything, and keep the camera video with your claim records.

How long does a sewer pipe last?

This Old House puts cast iron at 75 to 100 years with proper care and PVC at 100 years or more. Age alone will not tell you much in Houston, though, because clay movement and roots can break a young pipe. A camera shows the condition of your pipe better than any table can.
