PipeElectric will consider plumbing work in Beaumont, TX, but it is the longest trip on our list, about 85 miles from downtown Houston via I-10. Please phone first so availability at your address can be confirmed. Storms are what set Beaumont apart. Rita in 2005, Ike in 2008, Harvey in 2017 and Imelda in 2019 all hit this Neches River city, and each tested its older pipes.

Call and tell us your neighborhood, how many storms the house has been through, and what was replaced after each. Beaumont is an old oil town, with Spindletop arriving in 1901, and an estimated 112,967 people live here now. A lot of its housing has seen more than one flood.

Beaumont clay and 1950s-1970s houses

Two forces work together here. Geologists named the Beaumont Formation after this city, and its main material is clay. Jefferson County is low and flat, rising only to about 50 feet, and it gets about 53 inches of rain a year, per the Handbook of Texas. Wet clay swells, dry clay shrinks, and slabs and buried lines go along for the ride.

The Beaumont Formation's clay is named for this city.

The housing is the second force. Census ACS estimates put the median home at 1978, with about 46 percent built from 1950 to 1979. Those houses often have cast iron drains, galvanized supply lines and sewer laterals of a similar age. About 45 percent of homes are rented, so owners may not know a line's history.

Plumbing in Beaumont after Harvey and Imelda

Flood damage in pipes can stay hidden for years, so check for these:

  1. Drains that gurgle after a storm
  2. A sewer smell at a floor drain or yard cleanout
  3. A meter that moves with every fixture off
  4. Flood-era repairs tied into original pipe

Floodwater that reaches a yard can leave silt in cleanouts and sewer lines.

These services match what storms and clay do here:

The Neches River water supply lesson

Know your own shut-off. On August 31, 2017, Harvey's flooding took out the city's main pump station on the Neches River and its secondary source at the Loeb Wells, The Texas Tribune reported. A house with a working main valve and stored water fares much better when a system goes down like that. The city warned early that morning that it expected to lose pressure citywide within three to four hours, and Beaumont Fire Rescue told residents to shut off water heating systems.

Why Beaumont visits start with a phone call

Our base is in Houston, and it would be wrong to suggest this is a routine trip. We take calls from 7 AM, Sunday through Friday, and we will tell you whether your job makes sense for us. We do not promise a time. If it does, you get a plain account of the problem and a clear, upfront quote.

Lamar University, the Port and the Oaks Historic District

I-10 links Beaumont to Houston, and US-69, US-90, US-96 and US-287 all meet here. Lamar University, the Port of Beaumont, the Oaks Historic District and the Neches riverfront are useful reference points, with Pine Island Bayou on the low ground too. Downtown, the Jefferson Theatre and Crockett Street are easy markers. Give the ZIP along with your neighborhood: 77701, 77703, 77705, 77706, 77707, 77708 and 77713 all fall in the city. Oil is why the older neighborhoods exist, since Spindletop in 1901 made Beaumont a center of the industry. Common needs here are sewer repair after storms, slab leaks in clay, and water heaters and repipes in postwar houses.

The city's Building Codes Division handles permits. A 2023 IAPMO notice says Beaumont adopted the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code, so confirm the current edition with that office.

Plumbing questions from Beaumont

Do you really work in Beaumont from Houston?

Beaumont is on our service list, but it is about 85 miles out via I-10, and it is the farthest place we list. We cannot take every call here. Phone first with your address and the problem, and we will tell you honestly. For a burst pipe, shut the main valve and do not wait on us.

What should I do if city water pressure drops in Beaumont?

Follow city notices first, since the cause may be outside your house. Turn off the water heater if the tank might empty, keep faucets closed so nothing runs when pressure returns, and keep drinking water stored. During Harvey, the city lost both its Neches River pump station and its Loeb Wells backup on the same day.

Beaumont is a long way from Houston. Call first for an honest answer.
